A soldier who masterminded an attempted coup in 1997 is seeking to meet former Zambia president, Fredrick Chiluba.

The Times of Zambia reported on Monday that Stephen Lungu, alias Captain Solo, hopes to reconcile with Mr Chiluba.

He blamed evil forces for his treasonable mission.

Lungu was among 54 soldiers who were arrested for their involvement in a plot to topple Chiluba's government.

Lungu was released from prison by Zambia’s government on humanitarian grounds last week. He was sentenced to death in 1997 for treason, but this was later commuted to 20 years.

He was due for discharge from prison on February 28, 2012.

On Sunday, Lungu apologised to Zambians for his actions, which could have caused anarchy.

The former army captain told a church service in the capital Lusaka that he had always wanted to seek audience with Chiluba but failed.

He however, said he would continue to pursue this so that he could reconcile with the former president.
Zambia has seen a number of unsuccessful coup attempts, especially in the 1980s.
